Google recently released street view photos of the interiors of its data center in North Carolina, bringing light to the massive physical infrastructure that quietly supports our seemingly etherial information networks. The colorful expression of these complicated systems working together feels like a 21st century Pompidou Centre and creates some truly striking spaces. Seeing these reminded me of an interesting short documentary made recently by friends of mine Alex and Ben, in which they investigate the infrastructure of data in New York. Considering the impact of hurricane Sandy on the Lower Manhattan area and the infrastructure of the Northeast it is especially poignant to consider this often overlooked layer of our built environment that has a vast impact on other vital systems.
