America's 150 Favorite Buildings

February 12, 2007

Over 1800 'randomly selected Americans' were recently selected to vote on their favorite American buildings. While I completely understand that most people are going to identify more with the iconic nature of the buildings than the buildings' architectural merit, I was very disappointed with some of the choices.

Seriously... The Bellagio at #22?!? It beat out the likes of Fallingwater (#29), which I thought everyone loved... And don't even get me started about the inclusion of #70, the Dolphin and Swan Hotels at Walt Disney World. Ugh.

Still, I was pretty happy to see some modern buildings (in addition to the expected classical ones) make the list... Including, but not limited to the 333 Wacker Drive (#62) - Chicago, William E. Pedersen, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, the United Airlines Terminal, O'Hare (#102) - Chicago, Helmut Jahn, Murphy/Jahn, the Seattle Public Library (#108) - Seattle, Rem Koolhaas, Office for Metropolitan Architecture, the Walker Art Center (#117) - Minneapolis, Herzog & de Meuron.
