Branch Shelf / Coat Hook
14 June 2008
This isn't totally my style, but I like the combination of shelf and coat rack by Wok.

Most people would probably NOT be pumped to have these coat racks in the house... but I love them. How can you now get a chuckle when you see them?.

27 March 2008

When I first saw this coat rack, I thought, now this is the kind of design I can get excited about. I love the idea of multi-purpose design (is it art? a coat hook? a shoe rack?), and I always love design that is a good use of space. But then I started thinking a little more about the function... It would make perfect sense if hung near the door, but if you hung it above your couch like the photo... imagine the pain it would be! Who would want to lean over the sofa to get your jacket... or let your muddy shoes drip all over the couch. I realize that the image is really just a compositional exercise... but it still makes me wonder about the practicality..

This Mr. and Mrs. coat rack available at Bodie and Fou is probably a little too cute for my taste... but its been a while since I posted a coat rack (and I know you've been anxiously waiting for a new hook!).

I tend to prefer wall mounted coat racks, but I quite like this porter designed by Martin Holzapfel. I don't really like a lot of clutter, so its nice to get a sculptural quality from the everyday things you need and use..

02 February 2008
A friend of mine forwarded on this Pallucco bookcase, that she's in love with... The shelves are defintely fabulous, but I think I actually prefer the coat rack. Think of how useful it would be... after you put on your coat, you could use the mirror to check yourself out before leaving the house! The only problem, is that this system is deserving of a great deal of space... much more appropriate for a large (or at least tall) loft, than my tiny house..

Ok, so just because its ceramic doesn't mean that its fragile... but still, its hard to imagine throwing your coat onto a ceramic coat hook. Even so, I love the idea of this coathook by Gustaf Nordenskiƶld... using a traditional domestic material in an unusual manner..

Nils Holger Moorman has got a wide variety of lovely bookshelves, both modular and not. I'm also really digging his component coat rack system above!Via Gris

Actually, its a map rail generally used in classrooms, but it would make a pretty interesting and affordable coat rack alternative!

Design Milk has got the my same obsession with coat racks.... I found these great examples on her site. I generally prefer racks that can hold multiples, but these are pretty slick by themselves.

Another fun coat hook design... this one entitled 'gobble' by Thomas Bernstrand & Co. Although obviously hooks, this item is still worthy of hanging on the wall without any coats.Via Designklub

My favorite industrial designs (or more specifically in this case, Coat Racks) are usually designs that could easily be considered art when not in use. These Toda Coat Racks by Notch Design Group could easily stand alone as artwork... Now if only I could figure out how they work!Posted in Coat Rack, Industrial Design, Life, Modern by Michelle Linden | 1 comments

cut paper from childhood.
You know, when you folded the paper and made alternating cuts to create an interesting pattern. Its also reminiscent of wire lath used in stucco installation. This fun coat rack design is by Stefan Diez... check out the website where you can see more designs as well as some photos of the manufacturing process.

This simple solution by Viable London reminds me of paint running down a white wall. Its a simple but cute solution. I can imagine these hooks in a home with small children where everyone is assigned a different color (and height) hook.Via Product Design Project
