It is always fun when you see people you know in the news... I don't know the architects on this project (Ruhl Walker Architects out of Boston), but I know the local architect - Rhoady Lee, the builder - Phil Tinguely, and the mechanical engineer - Mark Morrison.

When I was living in working in Hawaii, I felt like there was a real lack of modern design, so it is nice to it start to happen more and more.

This new office by Doepel Strijkers Architects includes an auditorium, exhibition, meeting space, kitchen and flexible office space. The use of recycled materials adds a lot of dimension and texture... but my favorite space is the meeting room, enclosed by a series of salvaged doors, which could easily all be opened for shared meetings, or closed for private ones.

A very nice barn conversion by RRA architects. Barns are particularly conducive to modern conversions, as they are generally the epitome of form follows function. And that form is generally classic and minimal. The additive portions of the project complement (rather than compete with) the existing structure very nicely.

This paint could be ridiculous and cheesy if implemented poorly, but could be a lot of fun if done right! I love the idea of an entire conference wall (or coffee shop) painted with whiteboard. Instead of having a cheesy office depot plastic whiteboard, the whole room is your canvas. And when someone inevitably uses the wrong type of marker, you can just repaint instead of chucking the board.

I Could Not Love This More

This home, a comment on the archetype is absolutely fantastic. Designed by Portuguese architecture firm Aires Mateus, the home modernizes a classical house form. Rather than directing the residents' views outwards beyond the home, the light in this home is provided from the 3 story courtyard allowing for inward reflection and communication.

While I realize that this house isn't for everyone... I absolutely love it. It is a daring person who is willing to plunk this house down in a traditional location, but living in it would be like living inside your favorite sculpture (which to me, sounds fantastic).

I've been looking at this project for over a week, and I just can't stop going back over and over again.

This temporary (1 year) shop for e-types is located in Copenhagen, and is a physical space to buy fonts... An interesting concept... At first, it seems like a strange idea for a shop (doesn't everyone buy their fonts online?!?). But, when you think of the shop as a designer's destination, I'm sure it will be fairly successful!

I love this project by Osaka-based firm TOFU. I always love a good minimal design, and this is no exeption. However, one thing that makes this project different from other minimal designs is the cheery attitude it gives off. The selection of materials really keeps this home from being overly austere, even though the form is pretty rigid in its simplicity. The variations in the colored siding, the rustic wood flooring, and the gravel/concrete patio all offer visual interest and make me smile. Hope you're all smiling, too!

The idea of a folding facade isn't new, but I'm still digging this particular iteration. Designed by Andre Kikoski Architect and located in Brooklyn, this mixed use building offers evening protection, convertible awnings, individual storefront openings, and a highly stylized and ever-changing facade. Personally, my favorite view is down the sidewalk, allowing you to actually experience the folded awnings.

A very clean, minimal design by Dutch firm i29. This minimalist design is really lovely - I particularly like the way they integrated the texture of the living wall into the design - but it is also very unusual for a Dutch firm! Of course, I realize that is a complete generalization, but I'd have to say that the Dutch aren't typically known for their minimalism. Innovation? Yes. Humor? Definitely. Restraint? Not usually. And in this case, it is really working for them...

Marco Casagrande is a Finnish architecture working in Taiwan... He's fairly well-known for The Chen House, but as this project proves, he is thoughtful and considerate in all of his work.

This insertion of a Finnish sauna into an eastern urban fabric hopes to provide a point in which we can experience both the modern and the ancient. Rather than paraphrase all the ways in which this project aims to affect the city's chi, I would highly recommend visiting Marco's site dedicated to this project. It is well worth the read...

I was wandering through the Vola website (great plumbing fixtures, if you're not familiar) and came across their inspirations section... They've got images of projects in which their products were used, including the Danish Pavilion by BIG Architecture for the Shanghai Expo.

I really love this kitchen/living area by +31 Architects. The materials are right up my alley.. simple, neutral, textured. And those books add a lovely dimensional (and functional) accent as well.

This simple and clean houseboat is a great addition to the Amsterdam waterfront. I like the division of space, with the central courtyard connecting the pieces. Like the kitchen above, I appreciate the use of neutral materials and textures... that stair/ship's ladder is great! But, I bet it actually has a rope handle to help pull yourself up. Those risers look awfully steep!

Although most of my practice is residential, I am always drawn to light-filled colorful schools like here and here... so it is no surprise that this school by CEBR caught my eye.

However, with this project I find myself liking the idea more than the execution. The interiors are really lovely and bright, but the exteriors are a bit too busy for my taste. The hive idea is taken very literally and the wide variety of color seems overkill. But still, I am sure the kids love it and really... isn't that the point?

Cuts in Corian

I remember a magic trick from when I was a kid, where you would hold up a piece of paper and say that with one cut, you could make a hole big enough to climb through... of course, your obliging audience wouldn't believe you, so you'd then proceed to fold the paper and cut a back and forth slit, which you would then stretch out and actually step through.

This project reminds me of that.

And it is kind of unbelievable that it is made entirely from Corian.

A piece of installation art for the Bronx Museum, this project by Vito Acconci is a study of our understanding of public spaces. I'm not totally sure what I think of the project... I wish I could see it in person.

Vanity Fair - Modern Marvels #9

Number 9 on Vanity Fair's Modern Marvels list is probably the first architectural marvel I ever visited. The thing is... I can't remember the first time. In fact, I've seen it so many times I have trouble distinguishing any particular memories.

I'm from the east coast and have a history buff for a father, so I've made quite a few visits to DC, all of which included stops to the Vietnam Memorial.

One of the most striking aspects of the design is that it doesn't look anything like memorials as we know then. This one requires your engagement. You can't just take a look at a statue and move on... you actually have to walk through and along and experience the wall.

I with more memorials engaged the public like this one, instead of simply pandering to our cliched ideas of memorials and patriotism.

And what makes it even cooler... Maya Lin completed this competition entry while still in school, beating out (among others) her teacher who gave her a 'B' on the design!

Lux Park - and website update

Lux Park is a joint design by atelier a+d, Tom Mulica, and Mark Stoner. Entered into the Holding Patterns competition, we were awarded an honorable mention by the City of Seattle's Design Council.

The project's intent was to provide a place of summer refuge for Seattle's vitamin d deficient masses. Lux Park is perpetual summer in a bubble... a transportable design that can move from site to site, providing Seattle citizens with a much needed dose of sunshine and heat.

Architecture's Modern Marvels - #5

Number five on Vanity Fair's Modern Marvel's list is actually #3 on my list of visited marvels. And even better, it is located in my current hometown, which means I can go back as often as I'd like.

The Seattle Public Library's downtown branch is a spectacular building by Rem Koolhaas. But, just because I think it is spectacular, doesn't mean I love everything about it.

I'm not the biggest Rem fan. Having studied abroad in the Netherlands and received my degree from Illinois Tech, I've probably come in contact with more OMA buildings than the average american architect. And like most architects of his caliber, Rem has a few things that he does over and over to varying degrees of success.

My biggest problem with OMA's projects is their longevity. In my humble opinion, Rem tends to select materials that will shock you, without caring about what will happen years down the road. He is trying to illicit a reaction from you, and he is generally successful. But buildings are still meant to be used and occupied, once we've had an initial reaction to his interiors, they seem to lose their inventiveness. And even worse, they lose their usefulness, as wear and tear seems to affect his projects more harshly than others. You could argue (and I've heard this from people on his staff) that when the project runs over budget, value engineering is done at the end, usually affecting the interiors. So really, it isn't Rem's fault that the materials are falling apart. I would personally completely disagree. Imagine if I told my clients that it wasn't my fault that I picked an unsuitable material that needed to be replaced in only a few years. Part of my responsibility as an architect is to think holistically about the building beyond the ribbon cutting ceremony.

My other beef with OMA is that all of their buildings tend to take form by way of an extruded diagram. Sometimes this is very successful, and other times it is a useless concept (IIT's student center comes to mind). The library is one example of forcing a concept - the extruded circular path which determines most of the plan, sections, and overall form is incredibly difficult to use and frustrating for library patrons. This in not a library one visits to borrow books. You can go and use the computers, hang out in the lounge, walk around... but the actual process of finding and borrowing books is immensely frustrating. As a community center and gathering space, the library is very successful, but as an actual library - not so much.

But, even with these complaints... I think the library is a fantastic structure. It hasn't quite had a "Bilbao Effect" on the city of Seattle, but it still brings visitors. And it has brought a kind of innovation and modernity not generally found in the staid architectural community of the Pacific NW. That is my favorite thing... it helps the region think beyond the timber construction with exposed steel brackets that is so often regurgitated. There are so many things we can do today structurally, and this structure is really a fantastic example... in fact, the best part about walking around looking for a book is that you get to look at the structure from all different angles as well. It really is a special place. And if we think of a library as a place to gain knowledge, then the Seattle Public Library is definitely doing its job. You're just not going to find that knowledge in a book.

Architecture's Modern Marvels - #3

The building that hit #3 on Vanity Fair's Modern Marvels list is perhaps my all-time favorite building. It is at least in contention for the top spot. I guess the critics are right when they call Peter Zumthor the architects' architect.

In architecture school, there is always a lot of discussion about the experience of the space. About entry, passage... about the journey.

The Therme Bath Vals is a spa set up in the mountains of Switzerland, and if any building is about the journey... then it is this one. I drove with friends from Zurich up to Chur and then on to Vals. For someone who hadn't really spent much time in the mountains, the drive was unbelievable. The scenery was so picturesque and quaint - at one time we were stopped by a passing farmer and his herd of cattle!

By the time we got to Vals, I was soooo ready to be at the spa. The excitement had really been building. As someone who loves minimalist design, but also loves tactile, crafted designs, Zumthor has always been one of my favorite architects.

Believe me, the spa did not disappoint. The exterior structure is gorgeous, constructed of locally quarried stone in long linear patterns. The massive forms sink into the mountainside, with the green roof furthering the feeling that you are being enveloped by your surroundings.

Once inside, we donned our bathing suits and made our way into the pools. Talk about the progression of space... I can still remember the different experiences in each pool; the hot water right next to the unbearable cold, the rose petal water, the tiny pool with the highest ceiling, the pass-through from inside to out. We swam and swam until we were so shriveled we couldn't possibly stay any longer.

Buildings are meant to be experienced, and the Therme Bath Vals was one of the unforgettable experiences of my life. How can you not love this building and this architect?

Architecture's Modern Marvels - #1

As many of you probably know, Vanity Fair recently compiled a list of Architecture's Modern Marvels. And it is really a pretty good list. Probably because they actually took the time to survey real (and prestigious) architects, rather than simply give us a list of the most popular according to HGTV. Since I've been fortunate to visit 6 of the top 21, I thought I'd take the time to write a bit about my experience with those buildings... after all, architecture is really all about the experience.

First up is Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Bilbao, which coincidentally was the site of my first ever architectural pilgrimage. While lately it has been pretty popular to hate on Gehry (I'm as guilty as anyone), it is hard to deny the success of this building.

One of my closest/oldest friends has lived in Bilbao most of her life, so the summer after my freshman year in college (1998 - just after the building opened), I took a trip to visit her. The trip was mostly social... I wanted to see my friend, but I have to admit I was also excited about the prospect of seeing this building, one that we'd been hearing about in school all year long.

Even though I've known all my life that I wanted to be an architect, I had a bit of a rough start my freshman year. I just wasn't cut out for the tedium of pencil shading, hard-lining, and precision. Precision had never been my forte, but that was exactly what we were expected to produce. In fact, after a year of hard-lining (of which I was adequate, but certainly not a star), I was beginning to wonder if architecture was meant for me after all.

That all changed when I visited Bilbao. Along with my friend and her family, we spent the day visiting the museum. Just walking the streets up towards the museum took my breath away. Clearly, this was an icon. The museum had been open for less than a year, but everyone knew that the city was changed forever. The Bilbao effect has since been coined to describe the complete and utterly positive changes on a city by a singular structure.

We spent the day wandering through the museum. For anyone who ever travels with families, you know how difficult this can be. Trying to accommodate young children, the elderly, and everyone in between can be hard, and more often than not I'm leaving the museum sooner than desired. But, with the Guggenheim, no one wanted to leave.

We all know that "form follows function" is not how Gehry works. But for some reason, the form and the function of this building are completely interconnected. All of the spaces are appropriately formed from the inside to suit the artwork, while still creating Gehry's sculpture from the outside.

Do I think it is perfect? Of course not, no building is. But whether or not the Guggenheim Bilbao is to your taste or not, you have to admit that it is a spectacular piece of architecture. This one building does more than most architects' entire careers. It has unity a city, brought (some) prosperity to that city, and become an iconic symbol across the world. It has managed the unique and delicate balance of fantastic form and suitable function. It has helped to advance both the architectural and building technologies - in the field and in the office. And perhaps least importantly to most, but most importantly to me... it helped remind me why I wanted to be an architect, and helped me to return to school completely motivated and totally invigorated.

A friend of mine sent this to me because she knows my affinity for coat racks... I have to say, I love this design. I probably wouldn't want more than one, but I think this folding hanging chair would be a fantastic valet. I know that we could certainly use one. It would be great for preparing your clothes for the next day and perfect for small spaces where you could hang up the valet when done.

PSLab Beirut designed site specific lighting designs. These ones are great... a play on both a standard chandelier and the iconic cylinder of the wine bottle. The fixtures really add to the space, rather than detracting from it, helping to provide the barrel vaulted space with a more intimate feeling.

Check out their website. There are a lot of fun lighting fixtures... and the website itself it a lot of fun to peruse. There are great images of their sketchbooks - some with animated flipping pages!

This project somehow manages to be quite lovely, while still bordering on kitsch. The simple materials and form keep you from being overwhelmed by the story and cut-out tree imagery. I have to admit... the more I look at the project, the more it grows on me. Freya's cabin, designed by Studio Weave takes advantage of new technologies to giving new form to a fairy-tale typology. Wouldn't it be great to see this cabin in a new updated version of the Brothers Grimm?

A friend of mine from school is living in Chicago and maintaining his long distance relationship with his girlfriend in Coimbra, Portugal. They are both totally stylish and talented, so I'm not surprised that they decided to take advantage of their environment to proclaim their love. Painted on the stone by a tree below her apartment, I'm sure this Love Tree brings a smile to her face every day.

A Great Place to Learn

Well, it has been a long week and I'm tired, so pardon me if I'm not totally coherent!

First off... let me say that I just love this Granada elementary school by Alejandro Munoz Miranda. I have featured a few schools on this site, and they are all actually quite similar. I'm not sure if this shows a common trend or (more likely) a common thread in my tastes.

I am a big fan of minimal design... Unfortunately, I live in a region that seems to have a physical reaction to the idea of minimal (regionalism and craft are all the rage here). So many architects, designers, and especially clients seem to think that minimal automatically means cold. But, as you can see here... it doesn't have to at all. A minimal structure can still be warm, inviting, an colorful!

Although I wish the photos included the students actually using the space (why are architects outside of Dwell so reluctant to show people using their buildings?), I can imagine how much fun kids and teachers would have in this building.

All in all, I really like this project and would love to see it first hand (preferably during the days when students are running around!). Does anyone want to send me to Spain? My bags can be packed immediately! ;)

I quite like this house in the trees by Martin Fernandez de Lema and Nicolas F Moreno Deutsch. Not being allowed to take down trees, the architects came up with a clever solution to work around them - incorporating the trees into the building itself.

As much as their solution for the trees.. I really like their material selection. There is a lot of texture and warmth in the home, without the overuse of too many materials.

How Embarrassing

So, the World Expo 2010 is taking place in Shanghai, and many of the world's best architects have contributed designs. Many countries have hired the best architects found in their own country, while others have ventured out beyond their borders... but most designs have something in common... trying to articulate the priorities and passions of their home country, exuding confidence and creativity. Of course, I say most because the US is one glaring exception. What does our pavilion say about us? We could be locate along any highway in any suburb. We value conformity and corporate culture (which we can directly link to many of the problems plaguing our nation). We don't really have any place for innovation or creativity and we certainly don't value our architects, which is why we hired a Canadian to design a metal panelled representation of an eagle (there is that lack of creativity and ingenuity again).

Very Frustrating. An expo is not an office park.

People tend to be scared of bridges... never wanting them in their neighborhood. Here in Seattle we're dealing with all kinds of trouble with the 520 interchange and how to do it. Personally, I'd love to see a really lovely bridge go in as part of the solution... so much better than another dreary drawbridge.

The light fixtures in this space really make it.... without them, it would just be a big (and overly tall) room. Instead, the fixtures bring the space into a more intimate and human scale.

I love seeing what my friends from school are up to now that we're so far away from graduation...

One of my former studio mates recently sent me a link to his firm and their recently completed project converting a 3 flat into an open office structure. In order to obtain the open plan, the architects (RS2) had to develop a steel structure which could span the entire width of the building, while supporting the roof loads. Our Miesian education is evident (but not too literal) in the design.

40 ways to celebrate 40 years of Earth Day

1. Stop drinking from individual water bottles and use a reusable one instead.
2. Plant a tree that will provide shade and beauty for years to come.
3. Insulate all ductwork to minimize energy loss in your home.
4. Walk or bike to work for one week instead of driving.
5. Attempt to go one week without bringing any new plastic into your home.
6. Investigate alternative energy sources for your home - The government is still offering tax credits!
7. Go vegetarian at least once per week.
8. Visit your local farmer's market for locally grown groceries.
9. Use catch basins connected to downspouts to collect water for gardening.
10. Turn off your computer every night. This saves $$ and energy.
11. Build a microbial fuel cell and use it to generate electricity from compost.
12. Build your own solar panel from recycled aluminum cans.
13. Turn off the tv for a night and read a book.
14. Get rid of your windex and use water and vinegar instead.

Although I would prefer to see pictures of this house filled with furniture, books, etc.... I quite like this project. A simple exterior form with minimal detailing and fenestration, and yet the interior is filled with light. I also like the bridge through the main space... it helps break up the otherwise very tall room.

The AIA recently completed a survey which includes information on who exactly is making up the profession... It is interesting to see how the percentages of minorities (while still woefully low) have been increasing, but the percentage of women has stagnated a bit...

I really want to go to Africa.... and yes, I realize the continent is too big to visit in one trip (or a lifetime). I've got some specific ideas, but I won't go into too much detail here. C & I had once upon a time planned on going when I turned 30, but that snuck up way too fast... so then we decided we'd go for our 10 year anniversary, but now the economy and time are in cahoots to make this a 40th birthday bash! Still, even with years to go to save up, I have a feeling that we won't be staying anywhere near as nice as these hotels... but a girl can dream, right?

Volume and Light

This is a great little summer house (or even full time house) by Tham & Videgard Arkitekter. It uses a simple form and palette of materials, but uses volume and directed views to create a special experience. The finished photos really show off the texture and light in the space, but I really love the study model photos. It is always great to see how architects actually think and work.

Sometimes I it drives me nuts when buildings are sculptural for no reason other than to look good... but, in the case of chapels, I don't mind it... Chapels are meant to be icons for both their congregation and neighborhoods, so a distinctive design can often aid in defining the building as an icon (but, not a false idol!). This small chapel by Local Architecture manages to be both sculptural and simplistic, offering a meditative place for worship. The use of a solitary interior material helps to tone down what could otherwise be an overly ambitious form.

Personally, I think this is a fantastic project...

Anyone who reads this blog regularly will know that I love minimal design... and I love clean simple lines. The big criticism that most people have about minimal architecture is that it is impossible to live in... I've never agreed. In fact, I think that minimal design can actually be easier to live in and certainly easier to clean. When everything has a place, you never have to wonder where to put things. I think the big problem is that architects tend to photograph their minimal designs while they are still completely empty. Or, they might add a Corbu chaise lounge as sculpture. Honestly, I prefer seeing the photos of homes with all the typical objects you would find in a house, like this one. Check out that little girl's room! I don't think it distracts from the architecture at all... in fact, it lets me see exactly how the building is used, which is what architecture is truly about after all.

Beyond the photographs... the lighting in this particular project is really nice. I like the way the architects have used lighting to delineate space, whether at the tops of walls or along lengths of the ceiling.

I'm looking forward to checking out more designs by the architects, MZC Architettura.

A few projects by Slade Architecture...

I like the sculptural and graphic qualities of Slade's design work. They seem to strike a nice balance between whimsy and minimalism, without straying to far into one realm the other. Some homes be so minimal that you wonder how anyone can actually live in them... and some sculptural designs can be so dramatic that you wonder how anyone can live with them for very long! I do however, wonder what kind of person it would take to live in the house with all the exposed sweater shelves.... mine have never been stacked that neatly!

The Green Blue Book

I've been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to review a few books lately... the latest being the Green Blue Book by Thomas M. Kostigen.

As someone who is interested in all things green... I think this is a great little book! So often, we think about the easy way to save materials (and in this case water), but we don't worry about the embodied energy of those same materials. I mean, bamboo flooring may be certified green, but it is still shipped over from overseas, which isn't exactly sustainable. The same kind of thinking can be applied to water conservation and this book really shows you how.

The Green Blue Book illustrates exactly how many gallons of water go into your daily foods, materials, resources, and more. Want to know how many gallons it takes to produce your tennis shoes? or your spinach salad? It's all in the book... Which by the way was definitely written by a man. In the clothing section it suggests women can save water by wearing thongs instead of briefs, but doesn't suggest the same for men!

The book is a quick and easy read, and a great resource for future purchases. If you're interested check it out...

I was at the Cupcake Royale on Capitol Hill the other day.... and really fell in love with the interior. A quick post on twitter, and soon I knew the designer! Domestic Architecture, an offshoot of Roy McMakin's sculpture and furniture design developed a really fantastic interior space that successfully integrates sculpture (not in the photo, but fantastic bent wire birds decorate one of the main walls), custom furniture, branding, and the overall space.

I've spent the afternoon looking through the rest of Domestic Architecture's site... The use of color is great, as is the treatment of the buildings as sculpture. The graphic nature of most of the designs is a testament to Roy's life as a sculptor and designer.

Most of these properties are private, but if you have the opportunity, definitely check out Cupcake Royale.

Patterns in the Concrete

I love homes with a neutral palette of materials and interesting textures. [In fact, this color palette is not all that different than the one I chose for my house].

This particular house interior by AOC is great! The hearth alone is fantastic... the parquet pattern created by the formwork provides a focal point for the home while reflecting the old-school materials of the original home. And there are plenty of other interesting details (plywood panels form a negative space balustrade, picture frames form the handles on cabinets, bookcases become room dividers, etc) to check out...

Now, what I really want to know is if the rabbit actually resides in the home, or if it was brought in for the photo shoot!

I feel like I should hate this project by BEHF.... The colors alone should be way too much in such a large structure. And generally, I would find the rotated floor plates a bit heavy handed. But for some reason, I really like this project. Maybe it is because I know that the high-rise is located in the Philippines. It just seems totally appropriate for a tropical city. I wish I could read the German on the website to see if it actually is slated for construction.

Of course, the retail space above has already been built, so we don't have to wonder about what would actually make through the design process. Personally, I don't have strong feelings one way or the other about the interior; there's nothing wrong with it, but I do feel as those I've seen it before. But the exterior... now that is lovely. I love the way the canopy engages the street; it's both welcoming and protective. I can easily see that store becoming a meeting place... it would be easy to recognize, and fun to visit!

I love the quality of John Pawson's sketches... I wonder if he does them himself or if these can be attributed to someone else in his office. Usurping sketches seems common practice for some of the big-time architects... I know that Rem's books are full of sketches that employees have done. Still, I'd like to think that Pawson drew these himself.... after all, the minimal quality of the sketches seems to fit with his minimal architectural aesthetic.

They've developed 8 key strategies; Buildings, Urban Matrix, Smart Infrastructure, Mobility, Water, Energy, Waste, and Community Engagement. At the crux of their plan is the retrofitting of existing buildings, rather than the construction of new ones.

I'm really loving this hair salon... Designed by ZMIK Designers, the sharp division between the white salon, and the textured waiting area is lovely. The texture is also a source of inspiration... created by old Vogue magazines wallpapered on the walls and ceilings.

One of my favorite architects/designers, Claesson Koivisto Rune has a new design for a children's chair. Made from a pulp comprised of paper and a cornstarch based plastic, this chair is not only light and durable (which is great for kids!), but also completely biodegradable.

Very cool indeed.

The quality of light in this Amsterdam house by Rocha Tombal Architecten is amazing... I love a clean, white, minimal home. And the way the light is carried into and through the 3 stories of the home, is quite lovely. Still... I'd love to see the house "lived in"... even just a bit more furniture to give the idea of how the home is used would be great.
